This is a biography of Henry Every, covering his birth and early career, mutinies and an examination of the evidence surrounding his eventual disappearance. Every is almost unique in pirate history as being one of the very few who captured a pile of riches and lived to spend them. The political consequences of his piracy nearly brought the East India Co. (and thus the nascent British Empire) to its knees in the mid-1690s, but after returning to England in 1696 Every disappeared from the record. Although an enormous reward was offered for Every's capture he was never caught. His life and career inspired the pirates who infested the Atlantic and Caribbean in the first quarter of the eighteenth century.
