The first part is a concise group of history that describes fleet developments from the early purchase of second-hand tonnage, through the acquisition in 1916 of British Emperor, the first BP-owned oil tanker, to the rise of the giant behemoths'in the 1990s, and the new builds at the beginning of this century. Significant maritime legislative and technical improvements are discussed, for it was these that enabled successive BP executives to adapt, adn often initiate, safety features which helped turn early hazardous cargo carriers into today's modern and efficient tanker fleet.
