This course, in accordance with paragraph 1 of section 17 of the IMO/ILO Document for Guidance, 1985, should be taken by all who are to serve aboard seagoing merchant ships, preferably during their pre-sea training. A seafarer who has completed the course should be able to provide the vital immediate basic medical care at the scene of an accident until a person with skills in first aid or the person in charge of medical care aboard arrives. A compendium for instructors and trainees is appended to the course material.
